Those near the community of Lestock, Sask., were witness to quite the calamity Thursday morning, as a large train derailment was reported in the area. In a statement to CTV News, Canadian National Railway (CN) confirmed that 49 cars loaded with potash derailed near the community of Lestock, located around 140 kilometres north of Regina. Video from the scene shows dozens of rail cars lying off the line, mangled and packed together. According to CN, there were no leaks, fires or injuries reported as a result of the derailment. No dangerous goods were involved in the incident and there is no risk to public safety, the rail line confirmed. The derailment occurred at 5:40 a.m. As of 12:30 p.m., one public rail crossing in the area is blocked. CN crews and fire responders remain at the scene as the clean up continues. The cause of the derailment is under investigation. “CN would like to apologize for the inconveniences caused by this incident,” the statement read. “More information will be made available will be provided as it becomes available.” The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) also confirmed that an investigator had been deployed to the scene of the derailment. “The TSB will gather information and assess the occurrence,” the statement read. The TSB is an independent agency that investigates air, marine, pipeline and rail “occurrences” with the aim of advancing transportation safety.
