The Saskatchewan RCMP says a crash that saw a truck collide with a police vehicle near Punnichy was the result of distracted driving. The crash occurred on June 4 at around 11:10 a.m. on Muskowekwan First Nation near the community’s rodeo grounds. Both drivers were taken to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. However, the officer’s injuries were described as serious, and he was transported to hospital by STARS air ambulance. After an investigation, RCMP determined that the truck that struck the police vehicle was travelling in the wrong lane – and the driver was found to be using a cell phone at the time of the crash. The driver, who was only identified as an adult man, was issued a ticket for driving without due care and attention. Punnichy RCMP revealed in the update that the officer involved in the crash is continuing their recovery.
