Officials were called to the southern California home of Britney Spears on Wednesday to conduct a wellness check after the singer posted a video on social media depicting her dancing with knives(opens in a new tab).

Someone close to Spears called authorities “genuinely concerned about her wellbeing,” Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Captain Dean Worthy told CNN.

“Some would argue this is her expressing her creative freedom, and some might argue this is dangerous and there’s a safety issue or mental health concern,” said Worthy, but authorities opted to check on the singer’s well-being due to the initial call from someone close to Spears.

CNN has reached out to a representative for Spears for comment.

The initial call from the Spears associate, whom authorities are not naming, was to the Los Angeles Police Department mental health assessment team, which then referred the call to the sheriff’s office, said Worthy.

The sheriff’s office dispatched a sergeant who “has had multiple prior contacts with Ms. Spears over the course of many years” and who had rapport with the singer, to the star’s home in Thousand Oaks, California, to check on her wellbeing, said Worthy.

The sergeant arrived at the Spears home, Worthy said, and was contacted over an entrance intercom by a member of Spears’ security team. The sergeant “explained he was there based on information [Spears] may be experiencing a potential mental health crisis or in danger of self-harm,” said Worthy.

The singer’s head of security told the sergeant he was with Spears, there was no threat to her safety, and the singer did not want deputies to enter the property. Worthy said Spears’ attorney also called the sergeant, “explained he had just spoken with the singer,” and “assured him there were no issues with Ms. Spears mentally, physically, or otherwise.”

On Monday, Spears shared video of herself dancing with what appears to be two metal kitchen knives on Instagram. She later updated the post with the caption: “I started playing in the kitchen with knives today,” later adding, “Don’t worry they are NOT real knives !!! Halloween is soon!”

After receiving assurances from two independent parties that Spears was not in danger, Worthy said the sergeant departed the residence.

In January, Spears was the subject of another wellness check, when she said “prank phone calls” prompted police to visit her home.

The singer posted a note to Twitter at the time in which she addressed the police visit and said, “I love and adore my fans but this time things went a little too far and my privacy was invaded.”

Spears went on to specify that the police “never entered” her home and that once they arrived, “they quickly realized there was no issue and left immediately.”

The singer lamented that the incident left her feeling “gaslit and bullied” and that she was “being portrayed once again in a poor an unfair light by the media.”

“During this time in my life, I truly hope the public and my fans who I care so much about can respect my privacy moving forward,” she wrote.

In an emailed statement to CNN in January, Sgt. Jason Karol from the Ventura County Sheriff’s office confirmed that the department had “received some calls from concerned fans” after Spears deleted her Instagram account.

A federal jury in New York concluded Thursday that British singer Ed Sheeran didnt steal key components of Marvin Gayes classic 1970s tune Lets Get It On when he created his hit song Thinking Out Loud, prompting Sheeran to joke later that he wont have to follow through on his threat to quit music.

The emotions of an epic copyright fight that stretched across most of the last decade spilled out as soon as the seven-person jury revealed its verdict after more than two hours of deliberations.

Sheeran briefly dropped his face into his hands in relief before standing to hug his attorney, Ilene Farkas. As jurors left the courtroom, Sheeran smiled at several of them and mouthed the words: Thank you.

He then spoke for about 10 minutes with plaintiff Kathryn Townsend Griffin, the daughter of Ed Townsend, who co-created the 1973 soul classic with Gaye. They hugged and smiled with each other.

Sheeran later addressed reporters outside the courthouse, revisiting his claim made during the trial that he would consider quitting songwriting if he lost the case.

I am obviously very happy with the outcome of this case, and it looks like Im not going to have to retire from my day job, after all. But at the same time, I am unbelievably frustrated that baseless claims like this are allowed to go to court at all, the singer said, reading from a prepared statement.

He also said he missed his grandmothers funeral in Ireland because of the trial, and that he wont get that time back.

Before leaving the courthouse, Griffin waited in a hallway with her lawyers, saying she was relieved the trial was over.

Im just glad its over, she said. We can be friends.

She said she was pleased that Sheeran approached her immediately after the verdict and the two conversed at length.

It showed me who he was, Griffin said.

She said her copyright lawsuit wasnt personal.

I did what I had to do to protect my fathers intellectual property. Im very proud of my father and his work and me doing what I have to do, Griffin added.

The verdict came after a two-week trial that featured a courtroom performance by Sheeran as the singer insisted, sometimes angrily, that the trial was a threat to all musicians who create their own music.

Sheeran sat with his legal team throughout the trial, defending himself against the lawsuit by Townsends heirs. They said Thinking Out Loud had so many similarities to Lets Get It On that it violated the songs copyright protection.

At the trials start, attorney Ben Crump told jurors on behalf of the Townsend heirs that Sheeran himself sometimes performed the two songs together. The jury saw video of a concert in Switzerland in which Sheeran can be heard segueing on stage between Lets Get It On and Thinking Out Loud. Crump said that was smoking gun proof he stole from the famous tune.

In her closing argument on Wednesday, Farkas said Crumps smoking gun was shooting blanks.

She said the only common elements between the two songs were basic to the tool kit of all songwriters and the scaffolding on which all songwriting is built.

They did not copy it. Not consciously. Not unconsciously. Not at all, Farkas said.

When Sheeran testified over two days for the defence, he repeatedly picked up a guitar resting behind him on the witness stand to demonstrate how he seamlessly creates mashups of songs during concerts to spice it up a bit for his sizeable crowds.

The English pop stars cheerful attitude on display under questioning from his attorney all but vanished under cross examination.

When you write songs, somebody comes after you, Sheeran said during his testimony as he explained that the case was being closely watched by others in the industry.

He insisted that he stole nothing from Lets Get it On when he wrote his tune.

Townsends heirs said in their lawsuit that Thinking Out Loud had striking similarities and overt common elements that made it obvious that it had copied Lets Get It On, a song that has been featured in numerous films and commercials and scored hundreds of millions of streams spins and radio plays in the past half century.

Sheerans song, which came out in 2014, was a hit, winning a Grammy for song of the year.

Sheerans label, Atlantic Records, and Sony/ATV Music Publishing were also named as defendants in the Thinking Out Loud lawsuit, but the focus of the trial was Sheeran.

His co-writer on the song, Amy Wadge, who was not a defendant, testified on his behalf and hugged Sheeran after the verdict.

Gaye was killed in 1984 at age 44, shot by his father as he tried to intervene in a fight between his parents. He had been a Motown superstar since the 1960s, although his songs released in the 1970s made him a generational musical giant.

Townsend, who also wrote the 1958 R&B doo-wop hit For Your Love, was a singer, songwriter and lawyer who died in 2003. Griffin, his daughter, testified during the trial that she thought Sheeran was a great artist with a great future.

Rihanna is showing off her son.

The music icon, 34, shared the first official look at her baby boy, whom she welcomed with boyfriend A$AP Rocky in May 2022, on TikTok Saturday.

In the sweet video, the couples son can be seen cooing and smiling at his mother, who is heard in the background recording him. You tryna get Mommys phone? Rihanna asks her little guy.

Later in the clip, Rihanna and A$AP Rockys son, whose name has not yet been shared by the couple, sweetly yawns as he looks out a car window.

Hacked, Rihanna captioned the video, which marked her first post on the social media platform.

PEOPLE confirmed in May that the Diamonds singer and A$AP Rocky, 34, had welcomed their first baby together. At the time, a source close to the couple said that they were at home in Los Angeles with the baby.

Rihanna is doing well. They are very excited to be parents. Rihanna is already a wonderful mom, added the source.

The Grammy winner first revealed in January that she was expecting her first child with A$AP Rocky. After she was photographed debuting her baby bump in New York City, a source told PEOPLE that Rihanna was excited to be a mom and couldnt be happier.

Everything Rihanna does, she does it her own way on her own timetable, and having a baby is no different, the source said, adding that Rihanna and her rapper beau were over the moon about their baby on the way. Theyre just like any other pair of parents-to-be. Yes, they happen to be famous, but theyre just the cutest, giddiest young couple thats expecting kids.

Throughout her pregnancy, Rihanna showcased iconic maternity styles that often put her bare baby on display.

During a Los Angeles Fenty Beauty event in February, the singer told PEOPLE that it had been fun but also a challenge to play with fashion while she was pregnant. I like it. Im enjoying it, she said.

Im enjoying not having to worry about covering up my tummy, the We Found Love singer added. If I feel a little chubby, its like, whatever! Its a baby!

The artist later opened up about her son while chatting with PEOPLE on the set of her Savage X Fenty Vol. 4 show — which is currently streaming on Prime Video — in Los Angeles in October.

He is funny, hes happy — and hes fat! she said with a laugh. Hes amazing. Its a real cuddly stage right now.

The full weight of Hardwells comeback era has finally been realized.

Months of lead-up to the Dutch icons hotly anticipated comeback album, REBELS NEVER DIE, has culminated with the full release of the 14-track effort.

In trickling a steady stream of singles out to the public, fans by now are well familiar with Hardwells bold switch-up towards a mainstage techno-focused sound. However, while fans have processed the initial shock and awe of the superstar producers dramatic change in course, hearing the album now as a cohesive project in many ways is likely to provide his diehard supporters a newfound sense of appreciation for the leap of faith he took many months ago.

Hardwell was certainly cognizant that upon his return, fans would be filled with questions.

When I look at artists I really admire and they change their sound, the first question is, Why? Its not that I dont agree with them, Hardwell explained in a recent interview with EDM.com. I just want to know, Why? What in your own mind made you want to change your sound or your signature?

Thus, Hardwell wanted to ensure expectations were set appropriately from the jump. Opening REBELS NEVER DIE with the cinematic monologue of BROKEN MIRROR, he remains upfront and unwavering with his intentions.

The album proceeds to chug along to the steady pace of heavy-handed kicks and distorted basslines, breaking its supercharged stride only momentarily throughout for the occasional curious vocal sample. Despite his relative consistency, Hardwell continues to iterate and expand his new creative lane in such a way that it continues to remain a refreshing and engaging listen from start to finish.

The remaining piece of the puzzle, revealed this week, poetically brings the journey full circle with the titular track, REBELS NEVER DIE, which is also the albums closer.

Life is now or never. Never live a lie. Legends live forever and rebels never die. While theres hardly any veiled sentiments in those lyrics, the song stands as a lasting reminder for why Hardwell chose to embark on his road to reinvention in the first place.

While he could have simply continued along the path of least resistance and remained committed to his original big room sound, that future was never going to leave Hardwell satisfied. Though it was a challenge to step away at the height of his career—and perhaps an even bigger one to return—he remains living proof that its never too late to take one step back in order to take two steps forward.
