Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) says three officers were involved in the fatal shooting of a Regina man last Thursday. On the night of Sept. 25, members of the Regina Police Service (RPS) were engaged in a planned arrest related to an ongoing domestic violence investigation involving a 22-year-old man. Due to comments attributed to the man during a previous investigation, members of the RPS tactical support team were ready to assist with the arrest. After failing to find the man at a home in northwest Regina, police moved to a second home on the 3000 block of E Haughton Road. Police confirmed the man was inside and made their way into the home. At approximately 11:07 p.m. a confrontation took place between the man and police officers inside the home. Three members of the tactical support team discharged their service firearms during the encounter, hitting the man. Police immediately provided first aid as paramedics were called to the scene. At 11:14 p.m., EMS arrived at the scene, where they pronounced the man dead. RPS notified SIRT that an officer-involved shooting had taken place. SIRT accepted the notification, determined the incident was within the organization’s mandate, and directed an investigation to take place. Six SIRT investigators deployed to Regina to begin their investigation. SIRT’s mandate is to investigate alleged cases of serious injury, death, sexual assault or interpersonal violence stemming from the actions or omissions of on and off-duty police officers.
