Three teenagers are facing assault charges after a bear spray incident outside a school in Regina on Thursday morning. School Resource Officers (SROs) were called to a school in the 400 block of Fines Drive around 10 a.m., the same address as F.W. Johnson Collegiate, for a report of a weapons offence involving bear spray, according to a release from the Regina Police Service (RPS). According to police, a caller reported that two girls outside the school had been assaulted with bear spray, and the suspects had fled the scene. SROs arrived at the school minutes after entering “secure the building” mode was enacted and began an investigation. The two girls were treated on scene for exposure to bear spray. The secure-the-building mode was lifted after police found there was no further threat to students, RPS said. SROs, with help from other units, were able to find and arrest three 16-year-olds in relation to the incident. The teens, who cannot be named in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, each face two counts of assault with a weapon, and will appear in court on Nov. 10.
